Vertical and horizontal video orientations both hold important places and purposes in the world of social media. Vertical orientation is promoted for the following:
- Instagram Stories
- Instagram Reels
- Facebook Stories
- TikTok
Anywhere the video is automatically playing straight to your full phone screen. These are videos that are filmed most likely inside that platform and meant to stay on there or if they get uploaded to a new platform it is the same instant gratification type of content.
For informational type videos, and not the above social outlets- horizontal videos are best because:
- They have higher resolution quality
- allow the user to turn their phone for a larger screen image of the video (think IPad users here, also assuming that phones and laptops or desktops are the main technology it will be played on the computers are all built for landscape format)
- The good news is you can crop horizontal to be vertical easier than vertical to horizontal if necessary!
Outlets that should use horizontal videos are the following:
- Facebook posts
- Instagram posts
- YouTube videos
- Website videos
